After spending quite a bit of time on the south shore, we decided to stay close to home and hit the beach right outside our front door. Hideaways beach was literally within walking distance from our place and it is a hidden gem, literally.
It appears to be just a jungly cliff into the water but no...look closely.
There's a steep trail through the trees down to a sliver of beach.
This is the quintessential Hawaiian beach: lava rocks, lush vegetation, blue water, palm tree, secluded.
It didn't take long before the kids started to explore.
Patrick, Gavin, and Raegan decided to climb over the rocks and see what was on the other side.
The beach on the other side of the big lava rock was covered in flat coral and more lava rocks.
On the first day, we tried to hike out to Queen's Bath: the jut out of rocks you see here in this picture. During calmer summer months, its a serene pool formed from the lava rocks that fills with fish. It's quite dangerous during the high surf months so we weren't able to get much closer than this.

It was pretty chilly and cloudy with some rain so Ayden, Aislin, and I went home and the explorers decided to go back to Tunnels beach. They were literally the only ones there.
Well them and the monk seal snoozing on the beach.
The tide was much lower then when we were there before so some of the coral was exposed out of the water.
The kids had fun walking the beach, skipping rocks, and searching for critters.
We enjoyed watching the ever changing views from our place as the clouds and sun quickly came and went throughout the day. Patrick decided to do a time lapse on a cloudy day and another on a sunny day.
